Uptown Gallery | Yoel Pytowski
Uptown Gallery – Galerie Louise, 32 avenue Louise, 1000 Brussels
ArtContest, a non-profit organisation founded in 2005, offers a programme of exhibitions and organises an annual contemporary art contest which is open to young Belgian artists or artists residing in Belgium and who are up to 35 years of age. It is ArtContest’s mission to focus on discovering and showcasing the work of young contemporary artists as well as on providing them with guidance and support in their future careers. In his in-situ installations, Yoel Pytowski uses the space and the questions around it as a central narrative element in which he brings together constructions, destructions or reconstructions from the past or yet to come.
In the past six years, he focused his practice primarily on large-scale architectural installations. By introducing new physical elements or by creating vacuums in a space, Yoel Pytowski obscures the interpretation of the existing location where elements – mostly concrete – then appear to emerge from or sink into the floor. This situation of ambiguity sometimes makes it hard to discern the artist’s work. What to observe, where are we, what was here before and since when?
